I am allergic to PPDs in chemical hair dyes. The sad fact is that I'm vain enough that I was willing to itch and have my scalp peel for a few days after every coloring - until I started getting systemic reactions. For a couple of years, I lived with my gray. But I missed my colored hair, and I didn't like looking quite so old quite so soon. (I've been going gray since I was 18.)
I did some research online and found this product. It was the only henna hair color that offered to cover substantial amounts of gray hair. I have my hairdresser apply it, and over the years we've become confident and efficient. It still takes longer than chemical color, but is so benign that we both love it. The other hairdressers at his salon are always fascinated with the process - it makes the salon smell like a hayfield!
I have about 50% silver gray in my dark brown hair. With this product, I get warm, copper brown "highlights" where the gray is, and richer red-brown color on my dark hair. It looks at least as natural as chemical color, and probably more so, since it lets my natural color provide the highlights - no need for tinfoil. Over 8 weeks, the reddish color fades gracefully to golden highlights.
My favorite shade is Chestnut, but I've also had good luck with Dark Brown and Black. They are actually fairly similar on my hair, with the Chestnut being slightly more coppery.
The only caveat I would give is that you can't pick from a wide range of colors - it's really just warm browns. I do occasionally miss my purples and burgundies. Also, each batch turns out just a little different, whether from different plants in the batch or perhaps slightly different application conditions. All have been attractive, but some are redder, some browner, etc.
If you are looking to color your gray hair, and are willing to learn a new coloring system, this is a wonderful product. It works well, and it is kind to your body and the planet.
