Clairol Natural Instincts Haircolor Review

Clairol Natural Instincts Haircolori began using this color, cinnaberry a year ago. i love it and have never looked back. my natural hair color is an ashy, mousy light brown, and i am very fair. at first the color was a little shocking, hard to get used to, but it fades to a perfect gorgeous auburn after a couple shampoos. note this is not a "red tint" unless you already have dark hair. this color is slightly cool "cherry," which i much prefer over all other reds i've tried, most tend to be too carrot-y or orange. we're not going for lucille ball here, girls.

i get compliments all the time, and people are shocked to find out that i do it myself, at home, out of a box. the red tone does not fade out completely by the end of a couple months, but it does lighten. this color is especially pretty if you have blue or green eyes as it will really make them pop!

i wouldn't necessarily call this a "natural" looking color, but who cares. none of us are natural anymore anyway. however, it does not look "cheap" at all. it looks exactly the same as it did when i paid a stylist $120 bucks to go auburn. actually, i prefer it because i get to refresh the color more often since it's not as damaging.

tips:
1. don't fall asleep with wet hair for the first week or so after dyeing it. your pillow will be a mess, like one reviewer noticed. this is not a fault of natural instincts, this is normal for any non-permanent hair color.
2. don't go to a concert or do anything where you'll get all wet and sweaty right after dyeing it, again, the color will leak from your hair. shampoo a few times first.
3. be prepared for men to go crazy. you will definitely notice a different response from the other sex, and you gotta be able to handle it :) there's just something about redheads that they love...
4. leave it in for 20 minutes, even if you're not covering grays. with my light brown hair, it still doesn't get too too dark, the color just gets richer and more even all over the longer i leave it in.
5. dandruff shampoo can be your best friend if you do really think that it's too dark. just don't go try to put lighter demi-perm color on top of it. call clairol for advice if you really hate it. they're great.
6. read the instructions!!! you MUST wet your hair first, don't apply it to dry hair. and ladies, never, ever save any leftover dye for future use (this applies to ALL home hair color brands)
7. since it is a demi-permanent, it will fade - it's supposed to. to help keep it bright and rich between colorings, i recommend getting loreal colorist color-depositing shampoo (and conditioner if you can afford both) in cherry bark Loreal Colorist Collection Cherry Bark Color Shampoo 8oz. i use this maybe every third or fourth shampoo. my hair grows really fast, and this helps camouflage any new growth. not necessary, but nice if you can afford it (runs about $16).
8. get 2 boxes unless your hair is chin-length or shorter. better to have some dye left over than have an uneven patchy dye job.
9. maintain your hair! color-safe shampoos are a MUST, especially for reds. keep your ends trimmed! nothing ruins a beautiful hair color like a bunch of weak, brittle split ends and an overgrown hairstye. additionally, damaged hair will take up the dye differently than healthier hair at your roots.
10. you must be prepared for upkeep if you're going red. just a fact, nothing to do w/ clairol NI. red hair with two inches of ash brown roots looks gross and sloppy.
